Please download for useful information regarding driving, sites and facilities here and throughout the Outer Hebrides.

Wild Camping

On the island there are many beautiful campsites with excellent facilities and, it is preferred by the local community, that people wishing to camp on the island chose to stay at a designated campsite.

Plan your trip carefully, book travel and accommodation and follow our PLACE Visitor code.

Wild camping is described as lightweight camping done in small numbers, for one or two nights in one location. However, there are many rules to follow to protect the island, wildlife and others.

  • Leave your camp as you found it

  • Avoid moving or digging vegetation or rocks to pitch your tent

  • Ensure to dispose of toilet waste safely – bury solid waste 30 meters away from a water supply

  • Do not use a location which looks overused

  • Where possible use a stove rather than an open fire

  • If you do light a fire;-  keep it small and supervised

Wild Campervaning

Wild camping is not legal or possible in a motorhome or campervan in Scotland.

The community wishes are that all campervans and motorhomes use one of the islands campsite or designated parking bay in Vatersay.

Scottish Access Code

The Scottish Outdoor Access Code is based on three key principles:-

• Respect the interests of others.

• Care for the environment.

• Take responsibility for your own actions

Safe Driving in the Outer Hebrides

Taking a trip to the Outer Hebrides by car or motorhome is an excellent way to explore the area.  However, single track roads do    have a new set of hazards to cope with.

  • Please drive carefully.

  • Many roads are single track and narrow.

  • Please pull into passing places, let traffic behind you passed and always give way to traffic coming uphill.

  • As the roads are narrow and there are no pavements please take extra care when passing pedestrians, cyclists, horses and other animals on the road.
